UNDP is working on three main focus areas:

Guided by international frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) UNDP’s work on poverty reduction focuses on improving the economic opportunities that help people to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. This is done through sustainable livelihood programmes, social business enterprises and access to financial services.

UNDP supports Guyana in deepening democratic governance, and encourages the inclusion of all socioeconomic groups and stakeholders in decision-making. Initiatives in this area include assisting the Parliament Office with fostering a more transparent parliamentary process; supporting youth empowerment and inclusion through building the capacity of youth leaders; addressing solid waste management issues; supporting Guyana’s human rights institutions; and ensuring that Most At-Risk Populations for HIV/AIDS are allowed access to services without risk of discrimination or infringement of their rights.

UNDP helps Guyana to responsibly manage and value its natural resources and ecology, and to maintain a healthy living environment for its people. UNDP’s support to Guyana currently targets capacity-building and the strengthening of legal and institutional frameworks; the phasing out of ozone depleting substances; the mitigation of land degradation through sustainable land management; increased energy access for hinterland communities; enhanced biodiversity protection in the gold mining sector; and the strengthening of capacities in disaster response and risk reduction. UNDP is also working with the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs to facilitate the titling and demarcation of Amerindian lands.
