Suphane Dash-Alleyne, Aadilah Ali, Christine Rose Archer, and Yevnie Sukra are the Guyana delegates at the Youth Climate Change Conference 2017 which is being held in Kingston, Jamaica from 10-11 October 2017.
The 6th formers from Saint Stanislaus College, Queens College, St. Rose’s High School and New Amsterdam Multilateral School respectively joined other youth delegations from Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Japan to participate in the event which is being held under the theme “Our Climate, Our Voice, Our Change.”
The Government of Japan funded Japan-Caribbean Climate Change Partnership (J-CCCP) Project and the USAID-funded Jamaica Rural Economy and Ecosystems Adapting to Climate Change II (Ja REEACH II) Project are co-hosting the conference in collaboration with various other partners.
In the Guyana country presentation at the opening of the event on 10th October 2017, the Guyana delegation called for greater youth involvement in national consultations and discussions. They suggested that more youths pursuing studies in the climate change and the environment and becoming more involved in country specific research on the impacts of climate change can greatly assist in the country’s efforts towards combating this global threat.
The presentation also emphasized the need for established youth community based organizations and non-governmental organizations to focus on climate change and the environment. They also proposed greater engagement and cooperation among youths in the Caribbean region and internationally to tackle climate change.
The day’s event wrapped up with presentations on how research and assessment, capacity building, youth participation in policy decision making, youth activism and the legal and regulatory framework can strengthen the fight against climate change.
